Hong Kong Eats

I’m not an expert on Hong Kong restaurants by any means. For example, I accidentally went to a Sichuan restaurant alone, which… unless you can eat portions meant for five to six people by yourself, I would not recommend. However, I did find a few good cafes, takeaway spots, and restaurants in Hong Kong that could satisfy one, five, six, or eighteen people. Listed below are some of the best hidden, and not so hidden, Hong Kong eats.

YOU CAN FIND ALL OF MY HONG KONG RECOMMENDATIONS HERE.

YOU CAN FIND MY STORY, HONG KONG: THE CITY OF OPULENCE HERE.

multiple locations

This might be the only chain I recommend, ever. Genki Sushi is perfect for when you want fast and cheap sushi, and miso soup, of course. Come here to eat alone or with a group of friends, and devour plates of sushi from mini train conveyor belts.

Keung Kee Dai Pai Dong

219 Ki Lung St, Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong

The best place I ate at in Hong Kong! Go here for an authentic dai pai dong experience, amazing Hong Kong tea, and fresh food cooked (quickly) with love. A few things to know… there aren’t any English menus, so make sure to have a translator app (or a very helpful friend who can speak Chinese) and you’ll be eating at tables on the street, so plan a lunch here with the weather in mind.

Dear Neighbour Coffee

Hong Kong, West Point Po Tuck St, 15號號地下

Could very well be the best coffee I had in Hong Kong. I rarely drink sweet coffee, but the kind barista recommended a signature latte that didn’t disappoint in the slightest. Go here if you want to try interesting and innovative drinks and food!

Fook Yuen

Hong Kong, North Point, 炮台山福元街7號利都樓地下I-1舖

A stellar dessert restaurant in Causeway Bay. It’s best to get takeaway here, as there is little seating inside. Go here to try traditional Chinese desserts, like tang yuan in black sesame or ginger soup (I prefer the black sesame tang yuan, but you cannot go wrong with anything here).

ethos

G/F, 93-99 Hill Road, Sai Wan, Hong Kong (HKU station exit A1, Shek Tong Tsui, Hong Kong)

Close to Dear Neighbor Coffee, you’ll find ethos, a hidden gem in the Sai Ying Pun area. I am so happy I stumbled upon this place, as it was quiet, afforded me a few hours to work, followed by a few hours of eating lunch with my friend. The salad I had was delicious, and all of the other dishes I saw (smelled) coming from the kitchen seemed to be delicious too.

阿旦小食

Hong Kong, North Point, Fuk Yuen St7號

Right next to Fook Yen, this is another little takeaway shop serving many classic Hong Kong eats. If you eat fish, you have to try sui mai, one of the best comfort foods in the world. But don’t just try 阿旦小食… you can find sui mai, fish balls, rice rolls and other street food almost everywhere, and I recommend you try different street hawkers to experience the vast richness of HK’s culinary culture.

Ramen Bari-Uma

22號 D’Aguilar St, Central, Hong Kong

I found sanctuary in this spicy bowl of ramen while walking around Central one evening. Ramen Bari-Uma is a great place to have lunch (or dinner, in my case) by yourself before exploring Tai Kwun or the Peak. I would recommend the spicy ramen with pork belly and an Asahi (a rice lager from Japan).

FINEPRINT

1 Lily St, Tai Hang, Hong Kong

An amazing cafe with a proper neighborhood feel. Sitting outside of FINEPRINT on a sunny day while eating delicious toasts and drinking nice coffee is an experience, however mundane it may be, that will bring euphoria. Guaranteed. I recommend taking your time to enjoy the salmon toast and a cappuccino, or a matcha, and then walking around the surrounding streets. You might find interesting artwork in one of the nearby galleries, or be led by an unknown, but friendly little dog to a fragrant flower shop down the street.
